What is cohousing?
Cohousing what you need to know
Co-housing , or in French cohabitat ,
Shared housing or participatory housing. Also called communities of life, participatory habitats or even bofaellesskaber.
We speak of a cohousing when at least two households live in a building with possibly a garden in common. A booming alternative housing formula. A concept of housing located between the condominium and the small village, also shakes up the way housing is planned and built.
Living together, but maintaining privacy. This is the starting point of cohousing.
Cohousing (or grouped housing) consists of bringing together several households in the same dwelling, sometimes with shared gardens. There is always at least a common living space and at least a private space (the bedroom and sometimes a bathroom). Each occupant has his own house with a small private space outside, but he shares a series of common infrastructure, such as a garden, a dining room or a playroom or relaxation room for children. All residents are therefore responsible for ownership and maintenance.
Together but separate
Living together, but maintaining privacy. This is the starting point of cohousing.
In cohousing, each occupant has his own house with a small private space outside, but he shares a series of common infrastructures, such as a garden, a dining room or a playroom or relaxation room for children. The ideal in such a community is to create a mix of occupants, such as families with children, couples, singles and seniors. This gives you a group dynamic where everyone can fill a role.
Preserved privacy
Compared to other forms of collective housing, cohousing guarantees a clear boundary between your private accommodation and common areas. You can always retire to your own home whenever you feel like it. In order to secure this respondent, the number of residential units is generally limited in such a project. Thus, each occupant remains fully involved in the community. A smaller community is possible, but it is more difficult to plan common infrastructure.

- Their property is empty less often, which avoids the risk of burglary and deterioration due to vacancy.
- With the same budget, they can obtain a property with a much higher surface area and a much better standing by buying together compared to a purchase alone.
Co-housing attracts not only investors, but also more and more residents.
Cohousing is therefore a practice that could have a significant impact on the second home market in the coming years.
